What to Expect from a Golf Lesson

Whether you're the #1 ranked golfer in the world, a rising junior, or a newcomer to the

game, everyone wants to know what they are going to get out of a golf lesson. So we went to one of the game’s premier instructors, Allen Terrell, and asked him what players should expect from a session with a Pro.

Terrell, the director of instruction at the Dustin Johnson Golf School, provided three tips to help set expectations for golf lessons and your future success.

“Your No. 1 goal isn’t to hit it well right away,” Terrell said. “That’s usually the player’s objective and it doesn’t work. Your No. 1 goal out of any lesson is to develop more ownership and understanding of how your swing works and to get drills that will allow you to improve your game. You aren’t going to change a motor skill in 60 minutes and believing otherwise will only lead to disappointment.”
Embrace that you are going to a lesson to learn step-by- step how to develop a better and more sustainable game. Looking for an immediate fix will likely doom you to being a high handicapper. Accept that making changes will require work and, occasionally, frustration. Enjoy the process – it’s part of why you love the game.
Based on what golfers are working on and the time they have to dedicate to improving their game, Terrell provides his players with a timeline. The duration of the timeline might be two days, two weeks or two months, but it provides a roadmap that helps players understand where they should be in the process. “Whether you are a Tour player or a regular golfer, the most important thing for people to do is understand the process,” said Terrell, who has coached 12 PGA and European Tour players and 20+ All-Americans. “The biggest mistake people make is underestimating the time you have to put into making a change. Everyone is busy and has a different schedule, so if you can’t put as much time in, it’s not a big deal, you just have to understand it’s going to take a longer to make the changes.”
